Prof Chris Chapman, University of Bristol, U.K. (Programme Coordinator & Faculty)
This EDEN course will focus on establishing the domain of management accounting as a topic for research. As well as seeking to provide a grounding in the kinds of issues that typically comprise management accounting research a significant emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding the diversity of research approaches that may be undertaken in seeking to understand management accounting phenomena. A key learning objective of the programme is to develop a sensitivity to issues of method and methodology that underpin the knowledge claims at stake in academic research in management accounting.
This course will consist of:
This seminar is proposed jointly with the 11th Conference on New Directions in Management Accounting.
This seminar is aimed at doctoral students at an early stage of studying Management Accounting
We will be covering a lot of material in class. The list below outlines a range of references that you should comprehensively follow up on in detail after the event to secure your learning around the topics covered during the course. Your ability to keep up during the course will be significantly enhanced if you have read as much of the following readings as possible in advance however.
Each participant is expected to keep a free-form learning diary covering the entire process from preparing for the course beforehand through the end of the course. This EDEN course is deliberately timed to encourage active participation at the following conference, and you should actively take advantage of this opportunity to develop and test your understanding of the issues raised as they play out in the presentations and discussions you will take part in during the conference. Your learning diary should include a section specifically relating to this experience also. The final section of the learning diary should address you developing understanding of the assigned readings in the weeks following the course. A condensed version of the learning diary (about 1,000 words) is expected to be sent to Nina Payen by 14th January 2019. The learning diary should be divided into four sections: Learning Before the course, Main learning points during the course, Learning during the conference, and After the course.
Passing the course is subject to preparing thoroughly for the course, attending all sessions in an active participation mode, active participation with both your fellow attendees and other conference participants during the conference, and delivering the learning diary on time. The assigned credit for this will be 4 ECTS.
Besides doctoral students, other researchers may participate. The number of participants will be limited to create a stimulating environment. The selection among the applicants will be conducted by the Institute’s Faculty. They will review the following documents which should necessarily complement each application form:
