THE CONCEPT

The Summer School is a valuable experience for anyone involved in doctoral work in the area of technology and innovation management. It provides a unique opportunity for doctoral students in technology management to learn from presentations of leading academics in the field and to meet colleagues with similar research interests. During the intensive one-week course, the participating students have the opportunity to discuss their research programs with senior professors and with other PhD students in interactive workshops, and to meet the editors of the journals R&D Management, Creativity and Innovation Management, Journal of Workplace Learning and Zeitschrift fuer Betriebswirtschaft. A company visit is also scheduled to a firm leading in the area of technology and product innovation.
The European Doctoral Summer School was first organised by Professor Klaus Brockhoff at the University of Kiel in 1991. Since then the School has been held in different locations: Manchester Business School in the UK; Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, University of Twente, the Netherlands; Politecnico di Milano, Italy; WHU Otto Beisheim Graduate school of Management, Vallendar, Germany. Since 2000, the European Doctoral Summer School in Technology Management has been organised jointly with EIASM (see www.eiasm.be). The number of alumni from the Summer School now exceeds 300. A considerable number of Summer School alumni and tutors are still in touch with each other and play active roles in the field of Technology Management.

THE FORMAT

After a first Kick Off  day with ample attention for PhD thesis development and publication issues, and a joint company visit highlighting technology and innovation management issues in practice to create a shared frame of reference, the Summer School starts with two lecturers and the hosts addressing ‘Capita Selecta’ in Organisation Theory as applied to Innovation in the first half of the week. These more general topical sessions are in the second half of the week complemented by tutors focusing on their own specific research topics to illustrate a research agenda in innovation management. Each tutor will chair and give extensive feedback to 4-to-5 60 minute student presentations. Topics for this include Open innovation/Global R&D, Entrepreneurship and University-Industry Relations and Intellectual Property Management and Firm Performance. During the SummerSchool, student presentations and discussions will be organised around clusters of topics based on students' own research areas

Students will be selected according to the novelty and the quality of their research interests and by an indication that they will be able to benefit and learn effectively from their participation. Students should at least have finished their first PhD year in order to be eligible. They must show that they will be able to contribute to the event. Students will have their own one-hour session presenting their research to one of the tutors and the other participants (including discussion & feedback). For this, they are required to submit a short paper (about 5-10 pages, in English) describing their research topic, also addressing methodological issues and choices made. This paper will be circulated among all participants and read and commented on during the Summer School by one of the tutors and by other students. The number of participants will be limited to 30 to create a stimulating environment. Interested doctoral students should register on-line via www.eiasm.be no later than June 1st, 2006.
