PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The seminar introduces the participants to the methods, techniques and theories commonly used in their research area. It also offers possibilities for young researchers to get in contact with their peers, to explore new avenues of thinking, to learn collectively and to exchange ideas in a very active and stimulating way.

The emphasis is on interactive learning with peers about the practical aspects of setting up a research project

Monday 7 December : 

 Qualitative Methods in Entrepreneurship (Lien de Cuyper)

Context: social entrepreneurship

  • Grounded theory and process (single case) studies
  • Discussion of the Gioia Method

Tuesday 8 December:  

From research question to publication (Anu Wadhwa)

  • Introductions and exercise: What is an interesting research question?
  • Journey of a paper in AMJ and how to build a research agenda
  • Working with Quantitative data: Challenges and Pitfalls
  • How to publish in Leading Entrepreneurship Journals and how to tackle an R&R

Wednesday 9 December: 

High tech startups and Quantitative theory testing method (Massimo Colombo)

Focus 1: High-tech start-ups: what we know and open research issues (lecture)

Stylized facts on the performance of high-tech start-ups: Knowledge gap, funding gap and firms’ growth performance; Strategic alliances: antecedents and effects on performance; Financing high-tech start-ups: alternative financing channels and performance effects

Focus 2: Quantitative methods for testing theories about the performance of high-tech startups (groupwork and plenary discussion about selected papers): Definition of theoretical hypotheses; Choice of sample of firms; Choice of econometric models and model specification; Interpretation of results; Ruling out alternative explanations.

Thursday 10 December : 

 Qualitative Methods in Entrepreneurship (Bart Clarysse)

Context: innovation and entrepreneurship

  • Overview of different overarching theories and qualitative research methods (institutional, cognitive, identity)
  • Differences between abduction - deduction - induction as qualitative approaches
  • Deep dive into micro historical case study (Hargadon, 2016), Multi-case approaches (Eisenhardt, 2006) and Abductive Approaches (Burrawoy, 1991

Friday 11 December : 

Broaden the perspective (Philippe Mustar)

  • Entrepreneurship as a) an economic and social phenomenon; b) a research field (why does the discipline exist? What questions does it ask?); c) an Education domain (methods and Student Start-ups).
  • Entrepreneurial innovation as a process: insights of history, sociology, management and economics to understand it.
  • Collective survey within a Brussels start-up incubator.
  • Policy implications.
  • Reflexive exercise on “what I learned this week”.

 

APPLICATION PROCESS

APPLICATIONS
Interested doctoral students should register online (and add the required documents) no later than October 18, 2021 (New Application Deadline). Besides doctoral students, other researchers may participate. The number of participants will be limited to create a stimulating environment. The selection among the applicants will be conducted by the Institute’s Faculty. They will review the following documents which should necessarily complement each application form:

  • the applicant’s curriculum vitae demonstrating his/her capabilities of doing research ;
  • a letter of recommendation of his/her local faculty supporting the application ;
  • a two-page description of his/her doctoral research, indicating the general objectives.

REGISTRATION & FEES

The participation fee is 1100 € (VAT exempt). This fee includes participation to the seminar, the documents, lunches and 1 group dinner.

EIASM SCHOLARSHIPS
The Institute offers a substantial reduction of the participation fee per member institution.  These scholarships are strictly limited to students coming from an EIASM Institutional Member (the Academic Council). Allocation of the scholarships is entirely at the discretion of the European Institute.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations made before November 15, 2021 will be reimbursed with 10% deduction of the total fee. No reimbursement will be possible after this date.
