The EDEN DOCTORAL SEMINAR ON QUANTITATIVE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH IN MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING is scheduled on April 25-29,  2022, Brussels, Belgium.

Prof. Frank MOERS, Maastricht University, the Netherlands (Programme Coordinator )
I am a Full Professor of Management Accounting & Control at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. My field of expertise is performance measurement and incentives and I am especially interested in examining these issues from a broader organizational design perspective. Most of my recent work is at the intersection of accounting and labor economics, examining performance measurement and incentive issues related to promotions and careers in organizations, as well as the importance of supervisors in the process. My research is economics-based, quantitative empirical research, primarily using archival data (both public and proprietary). My research has been published in top accounting and non-accounting journals, including (alphabetically) Academy of Management Journal, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting Research, and The Accounting Review. I have been involved in the EDEN Doctoral Program as a faculty member since 2001 and have participated in a variety of EDEN Doctoral Seminars when I was a Ph.D. student.

Prof: David BEDFORD, University of Technology Sydney, Australia
David Bedford is an Associate Professor at UTS Business School in the Accounting Discipline, which he joined in 2005. Prior to his appointment he served as an accounting intern at CBA and Bovis Lend Lease as part of the UTS Bachelor of Accounting program. David was awarded first class honours in 2004 and the University Medal and completed his PhD in 2011. David has published in a number of leading international academic journals, including Accounting, Organizations and Society, Management Accounting Research, and Journal of Management Accounting Research. David’s research interests focus on performance measurement systems and management control. Specifically, he has investigated the use of performance measurement systems in firms pursuing different types of innovation, the performance implications of using combinations of management controls in different firm contexts, and the use of management controls in private equity firms. David has been part of research grants and projects from CPA Australia, NSW Health, the Independent Health Pricing Authority (IHPA), and the Cleaning Accountability Framework (CAF).

This EDEN course will focus on quantitative empirical research methods used in management accounting research (archival, experiment, quantitative field study, and survey) and frequently used theoretical perspectives including economic theories (agency, value of information, organizational architecture, and complementarities in organization design), organizational contingency theorizing (selection fit, interaction fit, and system fit), and psychology theories (cognition, motivation, and social). In addition, general concepts related to the design, conduct, and evaluation of theory-consistent empirical research will be presented.

This course will consist of pre-class readings, lectures, discussions, participant-team work groups, and participant-team presentations.  You will realize more benefit from this EDEN if you read the assigned readings before attending it. You should expect that there will be a homework assignment for each evening during this EDEN.

APPLICATIONS
Interested doctoral students should contact Nina Payen - payen@eiasm.be. Besides doctoral students, other researchers may participate. The number of participants will be limited to create a stimulating environment. The selection among the applicants will be conducted by the Institute’s Faculty. They will review the following documents which should necessarily complement each application form:

• the applicant’s curriculum vitae demonstrating his/her capabilities of doing research ;
• a letter of recommendation of his/her local faculty supporting the application ;
• a two-page description of his/her doctoral research, indicating the general objectives.

Each participant is expected to keep a free-form learning diary covering the entire process from preparing for the course beforehand through the end of the course on 29 April 2022 (including your post-course thoughts). A condensed version of your learning diary (about 1,000 words) is expected to be sent to Nina Payen (payen@eiasm.be).

Your learning diary should be divided into three sections: Learning before the course, Main learning points during the course, and After the course.  Passing the course is subject to preparing thoroughly for the course, attending all sessions in an active participation mode, and delivering your learning diary on time.

The assigned credit for this is 4 ECTS.

PARTICIPATION FEE
The participation fee is 1100 € (VAT exempt). This fee includes participation to the seminar, the seminar documentation, lunches and 1 group dinner.

EIASM SCHOLARSHIPS
The Institute offers a limited number of scholarships of 550 € each. Scholarships are strictly limited to students coming from an EIASM Institutional Member (the Academic Council). Allocation of the scholarships is entirely at the discretion of the European Institute.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellations made before April 1, 2022 will be reimbursed with 10% deduction of the total fee. No reimbursement will be possible after this date.

TIME AND LOCATION
The seminar will be held at the EIASM.

The programme will start on April 25, 2022 and is scheduled to end April 29, 2022.
