Dr Maria Quinlan, Pink Flower Research (Founder and Head of Research)
Dr Maria Quinlan is a sociologist and founder of Pink Flower Research, a consultancy which specialises in the use of creative, person-centred, trauma-informed research methods which facilitate people in sharing their lived experience. Maria uses these methods as an innovative means of exploring organisational culture, and the employee-experience; and as a way of co-designing solutions to complex organisational challenges. Her projects focus on issues of culture, mental health and wellbeing, engagement, equality and inclusion, and have been nominated for a variety of CIPD awards. Maria’s PhD (Trinity College Dublin) examined the impact of gender and organisational culture on career progression. She lectures in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour at Queens University Belfast, and was formerly Research Lead at the centre for Applied Research in Connected Health at University College Dublin, and Head of Research at the Institute for Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, Dublin. Maria has taught research methods for over a decade. She has presented her research at a variety of international academic conferences, including the British Sociological Association (BSA) and American Sociological Associations (ASANET) national conferences and the European Group for Organisational Studies (EGOS) annual colloquium, and has published a variety of peer-reviewed articles and reports
The present EDEN Blended seminar is a 3-day doctoral seminar.
The seminar will explore how participatory action-research methodologies such as Photovoice, rooted in feminist approaches to inclusive knowledge creation, can provide deeply nuanced insight regarding organisations. Drawing from case examples across the financial and professional services, the seminar will explore how these approaches bring the rigour of sociological enquiry to bear on organisational issues which are often complex and multi-layered. Issues such as systemic racism; gendered organisational dynamics; organisational trauma; cultivating cultures of belonging and meritocracy; effective leadership require a depth of root-cause analysis which sociological methods can provide (Acker, 1990; Livingston, 2020; Barsade and O’Neill, 2014; 2016; Sherbin and Rashid, 2017; Venugopal, 2016).
Photovoice projects use photography combined with in-depth group sharing and discussion to explore people's lived-experience (Wang and Burris, 1994). Dr Quinlan has innovated with the use of photovoice as a methodology and has adapted it for a variety of contexts - combining it with in-depth interviewing, design-thinking, experienced-based co-design, and using a trauma-informed lens to create a unique person-centred approach. These methods attempt to shift the locus of control from researcher as 'expert' to the participant as expert, and to democratise the process of knowledge-creation.
In this seminar Dr Quinlan will explore these person-centred methodological approaches, and methodological innovations. It will combine input on the methodologies, including the philosophical underpinnings, ethical and logistical considerations; with practical examples and experiential exercises. Participants will be given time and space to reflect on how they might innovate methodologically in their own practice, and how they might use the visual within their research. We will also explore how these approaches can be used to help examine our own positionality and to find our voices as researchers.
Learning Outcomes are:
Learners will have a comprehensive understanding of the latest research and innovations within the area of visual, participatory, trauma-informed research methods and will be able to identify how best to apply those learnings in their own research contexts.
Learners will be able to apply a series of innovative methods, tools and practices within their research. They will also gain insight into the practical and ethical considerations of working with these methodologies.
Learners will be facilitated in an experiential process of applying their learnings to their own research projects, leaving with a series of practical and actionable next steps.
