BACKGROUND

Welcome to the Call for Papers for the eleventh conference on performance measurement and management control. This biennial conference is the place to be for like-minded scholars to participate in debate and dialogue on current research and future trends in the practice of performance measurement and management control across methods and topics.

Whilst we were very excited to have the conference onsite in Nice again, in the light of current world events we have decided that the best course of action for now is to take the ‘Nice conference’ VIRTUAL.

We are confident that the scientific value of the virtual format will remain very high, and whilst we look forward to adding back a face-to-face element to things in future years and hope to see you all in person in Nice 2 years from now, we aim to maintain a virtual element to things also in future.

EIASM has been working hard on the practicalities of a virtual delivery format, so please submit your papers for the conference, be prepared to act as a chair person or discussant, and to hear from our plenary speakers (names will be available soon) just as before.

What will not change from the years before: the conference will consist of plenary sessions, panel sessions, and research paper presentations.

CALL FOR PAPERS

As in previous conferences, we invite papers using a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches on any topic related to the broad theme of performance measurement and management control. We encourage submissions from around the world with the objectives of having a conference where different points of view are voiced, creating an environment that fosters learning, innovation, and collaboration.

In the scheduling of workshops, we will cater to different time zones (for example, schedule Australian presentations early in the morning and American presentations in the afternoon, given that the conference is based upon Central European Time zone). We encourage submissions from researchers at all levels of experience, from PhD students learning the art and science of academic scholarship, to leading scholars who provide breadth and depth of experience to the discussion.

The topic of this conference is current developments in performance measurement and management control research. This is a broad topic by design with the intent of encouraging research and related discussions on important issues relevant to academic research, to practice, and to society. For example, papers could explore the following:

  • What big data, social media, and accounting analytics mean to management accounting and management control systems
  • How the role of management accountants is shifting due to changes in technology, both within and outside the finance function
  • How data visualization and analytics can be used in the control function
  • Business model innovation and change, and the impact on of platform operations and/or sustainable business models on management accounting practices
  • The use of incentive compensation and performance measures for employees who work in virtual locations and/or in virtual teams
  • Management control systems and packages
  • The integration of ethics and management control
  • Control practices that facilitate knowledge sharing and knowledge creation
  • Measurement of sustainable performance (including – yet not limited to – ESG practices, CSR, integrated reporting, sustainable business models, long-term value oriented strategies, eco-accounting and fair value accounting)
  • The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on performance measurement and management control practices in organizations
  • Performance measurement and management control for the public sector, including issues such as resilience and diversity
  • Risk management and management control
  • New increasingly popular management practices (e.g. agile) and their implications on management accounting and control
  • The impact of industry specific characteristics on management accounting and control

Guidelines to submit :

pdf file
12-point font
Single spaced
Maximum file size of 2048 KB

Papers MUST be submitted through this website or they will not be considered!

The Organizing Committee will consider all submissions for presentation at parallel sessions and provide a response by May 20, 2021.

Authors of accepted papers may load an updated version of the paper until 15 July 2021.

The conference will assign a discussant to each paper; that is, we expect that each presenter will also discuss another paper. In the evaluations of the conference in previous years, many of you indicated that they would like to have a discussant for their paper. While acting as a presenter and discussant may increase your workload somewhat, we believe that it may also improve the value of participating in the conference as you will receive feedback from another researcher in the field.

In addition, we invite you to volunteer as a chair and/or discussant for the conference. You do not need to submit a paper to volunteer, especially given that the conference is online! (check this in the registration form - forthcoming)’

The conference policy implies that an author can submit and present only one paper as a first author. However, this author can be a non-presenting co-author of other submitted papers.
