EIASM WEBINAR SERIES
THE STRATEGY OF THE MULTINATIONAL ENTERPRISE IN THE LONG, LONG RUN - BY PETER BUCKLEY

ONLINE - NOVEMBER 19, 2021
OBJECTIVE

Since its foundation in 1971, the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management has dedicated itself to raising the profile of European Management Research with respect to other established scientific disciplines, as well as the business world. We are European in origin, whilst being global in our outlook!

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the institute reaffirms its mission to foster and support innovative, rigorous, responsible and impactful research in management, governance and related disciplines. In this perspective, the EIASM Board wanted the institute to be able to provide the communities of the members of its Academic Council with a series of discussions on subjects that are both interdisciplinary and suitable for Grand Challenges we are currently facing in doctoral education and research in Management.

SPEECH

The long run is the period of time in which all factors of production and costs are variable. In the long run, firms are able to adjust all costs, where all the factors of production are variable. In the long long run, the global system environment will be determined by technological change, evolution in demand patterns, constraints from civil society (“governance by argumentation”) and by government policies. The strategic response of MNEs to this environment is the focus of the paper. The response includes scenario planning in the face of increased VUCA, changes in organizational structure (possibly including multi-domestic operations, alliances and cartels), regionalization strategies, reconfiguration of value chains, increased attention to non-market strategies and ESG planning.
