4TH WORKSHOP ON JOURNAL PUBLISHING FOR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH-SPEAKING RESEARCHERS IN OM

VICENZA, ITALY, SEPTEMBER 22-23, 2011
BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION

This Publishing Workshop aims to help researchers to transform their submitted and presented papers for the upcoming EurOMA '11 conference into journal-level submissions. We welcome in particular non-native English-speaking Faculty (doctoral students are welcome in EIASM’s Doctoral Education Network - EDEN) in the field of Operations Management (OM), who wish to increase the quality of their publications in recognised international academic journals.

Target journals are:

• International Journal of Operations and Production Management (IJOPM)
• Journal of Operations Management (JOM)
• Decision Sciences Journal (DSJ)
• Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM)
• Production Planning and Control (PPC)

(Other journals may be added to the list.)

The following members of the Editorial Team will act as Discussants for the papers submitted to the Workshop:

- Steve Brown, University of Exeter, Editor of IJOPM
- Christopher Voss, London Business School, Member of the Editorial Board of JPIM
- Cipriano Forza, Università di Padova, Associate Editor of JOM and DSJ
- Steve Child, University of Exeter Business School, Editor of PPC

Academics are judged on their ability to produce research papers appearing in good-quality international journal articles. These publications are also the basis of Business School and University prestige and success.

Organisations, such as the British Academy of Management or other associations managed by EIASM, have sought recently to support publishing activity by organising journal publishing workshops – either to encourage young researchers to publish for the first time, or to help seasoned researchers move up the publishing ladder. These workshops have been highly successful, to the extent that it is now possible to envisage a more specific targeting of researchers, both in terms of discipline and in terms of language focus.

It has been recognised for some time that the EurOMA conference presents an ideal opportunity for increasing participation by researchers for whom English is not a first language. Many such researchers either face a perceived language barrier or have limited access into Anglo-Saxon OM research networks. To our knowledge, there has been no specific workshop organised in Europe to foster publications in OM. Moreover, no workshop has targeted non-native English-speaking researchers in order to facilitate their participation to these international networks.
The Publishing Workshop has three specific objectives:

1 – Input
Through plenary sessions with members of the editorial board of OM journals, the participants will be briefed on the editorial policy, publication process, strategies for submission, writing and responding to reviews, resubmission process, etc. The specifics of publishing for non-native English-speaking authors will be discussed in particular.

2 – Transformation
The process of transforming an abstract into a publication-standard paper starts with the acceptance of the abstract by the EurOMA conference board. Following acceptance, it is expected that each participant will develop the abstract and present the paper at the EurOMA conference. It is also expected that the participant will then incorporate the feedback received and the experience gained at the conference(s) in a re-drafted full paper. This re-drafted paper forms the basis for participation in the Publishing Workshop. Each paper will be allocated to a journal editorial board member as Discussant, who will comment on the content and clarity of presentation of the ideas. The discussions will take place in small group sessions.

3 – Output
Small group sessions will enable participants to obtain feedback on their papers from the journal editorial board members, as well as suggestions for further development to bring the paper up to publication standards.
